The Transformation of Origin through Sustainability: The Impact of Regulation (EU) 2024/1143

Résumé

Regulation (EU) 2024/1143 marks a decisive step in the rapprochement between geographical indications and sustainability. Beyond the introduction of sustainable practices into product specifications, it prompts a deeper questioning regarding the evolution of the very content of “origin”. Drawing on the wine sector, this article demonstrates that the new mechanisms relating to sustainable practices and the sustainability report reflect a progressive integration of the environmental, social, and economic quality of the environment of origin into the production standard. It then examines the implications of this evolution on the link to origin and the identity of the product, highlighting the gradual integration of sustainability into origin-linked quality. It thus argues that the regulation opens the way to a broadening of the concept of origin, concerning both the environment of origin and the quality linked to origin.
